SEBASTIAN ― The city of Sebastian will conduct a recall election on Sept. 15 of City Council Members Damien Gilliams, Pamela Parris and Vice Mayor Charles Mauti.

According to an Aug. 26 letter from Indian River County Supervisor of Elections Leslie Swan to Sebastian City Clerk Jeanette Williams, the cost to the city for the recall election is $41,100, which was calculated by charging $2 per registered voter residing in the city of Sebastian as of Aug. 17.

Voters will be asked to choose from eight replacement council member candidates, should the recall be successful. Voters may choose up to three candidates. These candidates will not be elected to succeed any particular member. Candidates receiving the highest number of votes will be elected to fill any resulting vacancies.

The candidate qualifying period ran from Aug. 13-19. Eight active candidates are on the ballot, in addition to two who have since withdrawn. The two who have withdrawn are Albert Iovino and Victor Young.

Vote-by-mail ballots were delivered to the post office on Aug. 26, for the initial mailing of 5,620 ballots. The initial mailing was for voters with an existing mail ballot request on file. The deadline to request a vote-by-mail ballot was Sept. 5.

Completed vote-by-mail ballots must be placed in the official return envelope provided, and the voter must sign the certificate on the back of the envelope. Failure to include a signature means your ballot may not be counted.

Vote-by-mail ballots must be received by the Supervisor of Elections office no later than 7 p.m. on Election Day.

Ballots may be mailed or dropped off at the Indian River County Supervisor of Elections Office, 4375 43rd Ave., Vero Beach. If the voter is unable to mail or personally deliver the ballot, the voter may have someone else return the ballot.
