FORT PIERCE – Construction of a new trail is underway through the Indian Hills Recreation Area that will help bring the Shared-Use Nonmotorized (SUN) Trail Network to Fort Pierce and St. Lucie County.
The SUN Trail Network is the statewide system of high-priority paved trail corridors for bicyclists and pedestrians.
The new trail segment will be 12-feet in width and approximately one mile in length. It will create an improved north-south multi-purpose path through the recreation area from the Indian Hills Golf Course to just south of Savanna Road.
Work will commence at the north end near Indian Hills Drive and progress south. PRP Construction of Indiantown is the contractor and they're expected to complete the job by November 9.
Its a joint project between St. Lucie County which is the grant applicant, the City of Fort Pierce which is the project manager, along with the Florida Department of Transportation which is providing approximately $500,000 in funding.
This will be the first of several SUN Trail segments planned in St. Lucie County that will eventually establish an 18-mile route from North Hutchinson Island to Jensen Beach for the East Coast Greenway.
The East Coast Greenway is a multi-purpose path that connects 15 states and 450 cities and towns for 3,000 miles from Maine to Florida.
