VERO BEACH - As the city of Vero Beach debates whether to close the Leisure Square swimming pool, the community is invited to try out the recreation center’s facilities and programs for free on Sat., Aug.24, from 7 a.m.-2 p.m.

The whole family can spend the day enjoying the pool, exercise facility, and special programs.

Start at 7 a.m. with coffee provided by Starbucks. Then try water aerobics with J.A.S. Fitness at 9:30 a.m., and yoga class with Annie at 10 a.m. Watch a free performance of the Aerial Antics Youth Circus at 10:30 a.m. Participate in a 3-point-shot basketball contest with J.A.S. Fitness at 11 a.m.

The Recreation Department will serve a hot dog lunch at 11 a.m. The Mental Health Association of Indian River County will sponsor an ice cream social at 1 p.m.

This is a good opportunity to get to know Leisure Square, which includes basketball courts, a cardiovascular room, a dance and exercise room, a large, heated lap pool with lifeguards, meeting rooms, an indoor, air-conditioned racquetball court, two lighted sports fields, volleyball courts, a weight room, and showers and lockers.

Dance and exercise programs are offered at Leisure Square, which is also home to summer camp programs for children.

Open swims are available at different times every day except Sunday. See the Leisure Square webpage for times. In the upcoming week, pool activities will include water aerobics and underwater hockey.

This week also includes classes in martial arts, yoga, senior core, Jujutsu, senior strength, and Pilates.

The swimming pool, meeting rooms, racquetball court, volleyball court, and ball fields are available for rental. Call for rates.

Leisure Square hours are Monday, 7 a.m.-8 p.m.; Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 7 a.m.-7:30 p.m.; Friday, 7 a.m.-6 p.m.; Saturday, 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Closed Sunday.
