JENSEN BEACH – Captain Clyde Hensley understands the difference between wild-caught and farm-raised seafood, and that’s why you’ll find none of the latter in the thriving business he established on Indian River Drive here in 2008. Here your seafood culinary adventure will get off to its freshest start, where offerings range from Wild Virginia oysters to Bahamian conch, and all of it has to pass inspection by Capt. Clyde before he’ll consider putting the name of Adventure Seafood on it.

“We know that clean seafood is wild-caught, and here at Adventure Seafood we only sell wild-caught seafood in our retail market,” he said. “You won’t find any imported shrimp here: just shrimp from the United States and a great selection of special seafood from the U.S., Canada and the Bahamas. We bring in our fresh seafood from as far away as Nova Scotia and as close as out our front door here in the Atlantic Ocean.”

Capt. Clyde’s expertise in the ocean’s bounty stems from a lifetime at sea, having first set sail at age 17 to ply the sea-trade routes between Asia and the Middle East. He soon earned his Master Mariner 500 GRT [gross registered tons] license and even worked as a Merchant Marine officer. “I have worked on and operated most every kind of vessel that floats: commercial fisherman, tugs, ships, trawlers, yachts, sailing vessels and even marine salvage vessels,” he added.

During the course of his travels, he met his wife Brigid at the Grator Gator Food Mart on Singer Island back in 1982. She has since shared his passion for all things maritime during their last 38 years. Together the two bounced around the Caribbean operating an 85-foot yacht fishing charter boat before ultimate landing in Key West where they owned and operated the Traveler’s Palm Inn & Suites. In 2008, they sold that business and moved to Jensen Beach where he now spies out the entire Eastern Seaboard for the freshest seafood for the market and Brigid creates tantalizing recipes for the delicacies created on the premises. Capt. Clyde knows most of the fishermen and crabbers that do the hard work and stays in touch with oystermen from as far away as Virginia.

“We specialize in Wild Virginia Oysters harvested year-round from private beds, Key West Pink Shrimp, deep-water Atlantic Scallops, Bahamian Conch, Nova Scotia halibut, fresh-picked Blue Crab meat from Chesapeake Bay, and many more items,” Capt. Clyde said. “We pull from over 35,000 stone crab traps and always have the freshest you can find unless, of course, you’re on the boat with us. Our Bahamian Conch is sold as premium filets, and we also make Bahamian Conch Salad and Bahamian Conch Chowder here daily.” 

Ms. Hensley’s delicacies include 100 percent Smoked Wahoo Dip, Wild Alaska Salmon Spread, Smoked Tuna Dip, Conch Chowder and Conch Salad, Seafood Chowder, peel-and-eat-Key West Pink Shrimp, Calamari Salad, Crab Cakes made from a Chesapeake Bay recipe and Conch Fritters on Friday during the season. The couple also operates a wholesale division for the retail restaurant trade.

“We are wholesalers as well as retailers, and deliver the finest kind of seafood the treasure coast to offer,” Capt. Clyde explained. “We deliver to our wholesale clients fresh and on time. Quality and service is everything in this trade.”

Capt. Clyde is proud of all employees working at Adventure Seafood.

“We are Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points certified, and all our staff are ServSafe Food Handlers,” he emphasized. “Our truth is in our caring about our seafood market and kitchen. Cleanliness is our foremost duty to our customers, and we invite anyone to visit one of our kitchens anytime.”

Although the couple have sailed in some of the world’s most beautiful waters, they believe they’ve finally anchored in a piece of paradise.

“After selling our inn, we were looking for a special place, and I remembered Jensen from earlier years when I would take a company yacht to the Out Rigger, when Mrs. [Frances] Langford was there,” he explained. “I had a few martinis and oysters there with Mrs. Langford. So we dropped anchor here, and it’s the longest we have ever stayed in one place. We love Jensen Beach and the folks that have also found it and live here.”
