Well finally, they found a holiday for men.

That’s right, just for us guys. But the most popular holidays are for the ladies. Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day and almost every other holiday we often use as an excuse to make the women of the world happy. You know I am right. Let’s face it, they have us trained.

But not on the Sweetest Day – that one is all ours. It is celebrated Oct. 16 in many states, including Florida. The idea was born in 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio, by a local philanthropist who would pass out candy to the less fortunate. It started spreading to other states and, as it spread, it evolved into a way of saying thank you to someone you cared about.

Well, since almost every other holiday or gift giving was geared toward the ladies, the women of America decided to give something to the men of America they cared for and Sweetest Day was the holiday they decided on.

Of course, nobody really knows about it and they could have picked a better name. How about “He’s the Greatest Day” or “I Can’t Live Without Him Day?” I’ve got it, “Men are Wonderful Day!” Too much? OK, we will have to stay with Sweetest Day, Still don’t like it. I can hear my wife now, “Happy Sweetest Day darling, here is a candy bar, now what are you cooking for dinner?”

I bet they won’t be selling a lot of greeting cards on that day.

Of course, if it keeps evolving and turns into a day for women we care for, look out. The name will change to “Women Appreciation Day” and it will become a national holiday. Restaurants will be full and 90 million cards will be sold. We men will have to shower them with flowers, chocolate and gifts.

I have to admit they are pretty special, they do so much and they do put up with us. Hey, that’s it. We can call it, “She Puts Up with Us Day.” My wife would love it. Maybe we should just make it about a nice, sweet dessert for everyone. Let me start with this recipe.

Caramel Pecan Tart

Ingredients

1 cup firmly packed brown sugar

1/2 cup chopped pecans

1/2 cup whipping cream

1 tablespoon white sugar

1/4 cup light corn syrup

2 tablespoons butter or margarine

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Directions

In a medium saucepan, combine all ingredients except vanilla; mix well. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Boil 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat. Pour into pastry tart shells. Top with Chocolate Whipped Cream

Chocolate Whipped Cream

Whip 1 quart whipping cream until firm. Add 2 tablespoons melted chocolate and fold until well blended.
