SEBASTIAN - Pelican Landing Assisted Living and Memory Care in Sebastian will host “Paws and Pumpkins,” an animal adoption event in conjunction with HALO Rescue, on Sunday, Oct. 14, 1-4 p.m. The public is invited to the free afternoon of furry paws, food, and fun.

The pet-friendly community has always had a soft spot for animals, and this event is designed to be a family-friendly party to raise funds for HALO’s Angel Wings program, which pays adoption fees for people who can’t afford them.

“HALO is going to bring some dogs and cats who are available for adoption,” said Rita Merriman, Community Program Director. “People can come meet pets available for adoption.”

“All the funds that we’re raising at this event, and all the donations we’ve received for this event, will go to support the Angel Wings program. That covers adoption fees for somebody who wants to adopt a pet but doesn’t have the funds. Adoption fees for adult cats and dogs start at about $125, and go up to almost $200 for some of the puppies and kittens. They are a little more because of the shots and extra money that HALO has invested in them.”

“Right now we have enough donations to cover two and a half adoptions. We’re trying to raise enough to cover more adoptions.”

“We’re going to have vendors and giveaways,” added Karen Riddle, Community Relations Director. “Everyone is invited, all ages. There will be things for kids and families to do, and you can bring your pets. This will be a big, fun community event.”

“For kids we’ll have face painting, the ice cream truck, pets to meet from HALO,” said Ms. Merriman. “We have a pet massage therapist who will offer 10-minute demo massages for your pet.”

“Love of Paws Sanctuary and Paws Meals on Wheels will be here. They focus on seniors and helping them care for their pets. If the senior has to go into a hospital for a short period of time, they will shelter and care for the dog. They will also foster and try to find homes for dogs whose seniors can no longer care for them.”

Expected sponsors/booths/exhibits as of press time include: Pudgy Penguin (ice cream and Italian ice truck), Michael J. Pet Photography (taking family/pet photos), Nurse on Call, Pixie Chickz (face and body art), South Paw Massage (free 10 minute demo massage), Love of Paws Sanctuary, Paws Meals on Wheels, Nicole’s Mobile Pet Grooming, All Lit Up, Wabasso Puppy Pastries (Wabasso Middle School students selling homemade pet treats), Gina Johnson (jewelry), and Krisy Kreations (crafts).

“We are still looking for more vendors for the event,” said Ms. Merriman. “It’s just $25 for them to set up a table, and they can sell their product at the event. It doesn’t have to be an animal-related service or product. We want this to be a fun event even for those who are not looking to adopt a pet.”

The $25 fee from each vendor goes entirely to HALO. Some of the vendors will also donate a portion of their sales to HALO. Some of the vendors who would normally charge to attend an event, like the ice cream truck, are waiving their fees.

There will be crafters, jewelry, and art. “The Wabasso Middle School is starting a business making homemade pet treats, and they will be here,” said Ms. Merriman.

Pet photographer Michael Jackson from Los Angeles will be on-site with a mini-studio set up for people to get photos of or with their pets. Mr. Jackson will have a discounted package price for people attending the Pelican Landing party. The photographer will have different backgrounds and accessories to go with the photos, so this is a great opportunity to get your holiday cards taken care of in advance, while also helping shelter animals.

Pelican Landing will be selling $5 lunches, all of which will be donated to HALO.

Pelican Landing is pet-friendly. They currently have three cat residents.

“We do pet therapy, that is a huge thing with our residents,” said Ms. Merriman. “They love it. We have about six different volunteers with pet therapy certified dogs who rotate through our community.”

If you are looking for a pet friendly facility, Pelican Landing urges you to consider them and take a tour.

“We want the entire community to come out to the event and spend the day or just an hour,” said Ms. Merriman. “This will be a fun event for families and children. It will be great for people who want to adopt a pet, and also for people who want to check out our facility, but also lots of fun for everyone.

The free event is at Pelican Landing Assisted Living and Memory Care, located at 13085 US Hwy 1, Sebastian. For more information about the adoption event including vendor spaces available, call Rita Merriman at (772) 581-0366.
