VERO BEACH — The always interesting and unclassifiable band Swamp Rats will play the Kilted Mermaid in Vero Beach on May 8, 8-11 p.m.
The band calls their music “Florida folk-type stuff,” but that description doesn’t approach what they do; nor does the word “bluegrass.”
Perhaps the best description is on the band’s Facebook page: “Swamp Rats takes intricate claw hammer banjo and blends it with a driving punk rhythm fronted by gritty and soothing harmonizing vocals. Some have said the music sounds like a type of haunted that makes them happy. Folk with an edge is what most people say about Florida's phantom folk band Swamp Rats.”
Confused? If you go to hear Swamp Rats, expect a mix of bluegrass, punk, folk, and southern blues. Each musician plays multiple instruments, including acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin, stomp box, and washboard.
