Big Brothers Big Sisters began in New York City in 1904. The local chapter opened in St. Lucie County in 1984, then expanded to include Indian River and Okeechobee counties.
One-on-one mentoring is the core of BBBS. The idea is that meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers and children provide positive relationships that change lives for the better.
Screened volunteers give a few hours a month to their assigned children, just chatting, playing board games, or going for a walk, tossing a ball, hitting some golf balls, reading a book, or going out for pizza. Sometimes the children just want some advice and inspiration.
There is always a waiting list of children looking to be matched with mentors. About 70% are boys, disproportionately African-American and Hispanic, but only about 30% of volunteer applicants are men. So the organization is always in need of more male volunteers.
