VERO BEACH - Stand-up comedy returns to the Riverside Theatre this weekend, with dual headliners Julie Scoggins and Doug Almeida. The show is recommended for ages 18 and up.
Julie Scoggins, from Charlotte, N. Car., has shared the stage with comedic legends Jackie Mason, Michael Winslow, Bobcat Goldthwait, and Louie Anderson. Growing up, she memorized every Richard Pryor album, and could also recite lines from any episode of The Little Rascals and I Love Lucy.
Ms. Scoggins began her stand-up career after working for Frito Lay in the Virgin Islands. “Imagine that!” said Ms. Scoggins. Selling Doritos where half of the people smoke pot! Talk about your “market niche!”
Opening act Doug Almeida, from Queens, New York, spent most of his adult life working for a financial planning firm. His specialty was making insurance presentations funny. In his spare time, he fought as a kick boxer, retiring undefeated at 10-0. After becoming a stand-up comedian, Mr. Almeida won the Improv’s New Faces of Comedy and Miami’s Comedy Idol.
Friday night’s special guest emcee is Joshua Armenteros. Jim Harpring is the guest emcee Saturday night.
